The Best, Low Odor Sunless Tanning Lotion For A Great At-Home Tan

Avon’s At –Home Sunless Tanning –Achieving The Best Tan At Home

With Skin So Soft Satin Glow

What a pleasant surprise!  I’m sure you’ve heard of or tried Avon’s infamous Skin So Soft products line;  but did you know that Avon has finally released sunless tanning products that are pleasant smelling, silkening and very effective for achieving a high-quality, streak free, at sunless tan?

I’ve used self-tanning creams and gels for many years.  As white as I am  (I have Irish, English and Mediterranean heritage), it’s best for me to limit my sun exposure.  I am very white during the winter but tan pretty easily once I’m exposed to the sun or UV rays in a tanning bed.  My skin rarely burns, but that may be because I usually apply sunscreen.

Regarding at-home sunless tanning lotions and gels, I’ve used many products in the past but really dislike the after-scent most sunless tanning lotions leave behind. It reminds me of waffles!  Don’t get me wrong, I love waffles, but I hate smelling like one.  I was very happy to discover that my beloved Avon Skin So Soft brand has finally come out with a self-tanner line of products! Oh my gosh – they smell so good!  Very floral and clean smelling!  I couldn’t wait to try it on.  Not only is the scent terrific, but the fact that it’s Skin So Soft tells me a lot about the quality of the lotion.

Skin So Soft is well known for leaving your skin feeling silky smooth and highly moisturized but not greasy.  Best of all, the color these self-tanners leave behind doesn’t streak, tans quickly and the color is very believable.

The Skin So Soft tanning line comes in 4 types:  Absolute Glow Gel, Body Scrub, Flawless Legs Creamy Lotion and the Daily Body Moisturizer.  I purchased all 4 because I know I’ll continue this skin regimen year-round.   I am especially excited about the Flawless Legs Creamy Lotion because it not only tans your skin, but also reduces the appearance of imperfections to make my legs instantly radiant.  Those leg blemishes and unsighly veins seem to go away.

When applying, remove your jewelry, take a bath or shower (bath is ideal) and scrub down your skin with a washcloth and the Body Scrub. Pay special attention to scrubbing the skin on your knees and elbows. Be sure to shave your legs as well.  When you’re finished, dry your skin thoroughly and keep your hair up in a towel.  This will expose your face nicely and keep your hair from dripping on your skin.

I purchased the formula for medium skin tones, even though I’m more fair.  I tan pretty well so I’m comfortable with a darker color.

Squirt the self-tanner into the palm of your hand and apply the lotion all over.  I start with one leg at a time. Rub it into your skin but just enough to get it to disappear.  Don’t rub excessively as you may create a white spot.  Apply it only lightly to your ankles, toes, knees and elbows so the color won’t be too dark in these areas.  Generously apply this lovely scented, silky smooth lotion all over and when you’re done, wash your hands thoroughly and around your nails as well.  Wait about 5 minutes to allow your skin to absorb the self tanning lotion.  Get dressed in loose, dark clothing and you’re done!  And, what’s best is you smell GREAT!

8 Steps To Perfect Home Tanning

1. EXFOLIATE right before applying your home tanning lotions and gels.  Also, to regularly to avoid build up, soak in a tub for 20 mins and apply an exfoliating scrub with a washcloth at least twice a week.

2. WAX or SHAVE before tanning.  Ideally, it’s best to do it more than 24 hours before your tan.

3. MOISTURIZE. Once your skin is exfoliated and free of dead, dry skin, apply a quality moisturizer all over, especially to elbows, knees, ankles.  Moisturizing will help your tanner spread evenly and will not appear streaky or patchy.

4. WASH PALMS – try using latex gloves when applying to avoid tanning the inside of your palms.

5. COVER ALL OVER.  Cover every part of your body when applying the sunless tanning products.  It is completely ok to cover the same area twice.  Do not worry about if the tanning lotion will be streaky of patchy if you double up.  That only happens if you miss spots.

6. DON’T RUB. Gently smoothing your bronzer tanning lotion is good enough. Rubbing too much can make the finish uneven.

7. LOOSE FITTING DARK CLOTHES. After applying your at home, sunless tanning lotion, put on dark clothing and avoid tight-fitting underwear. Anything that’s pressing on the skin may make the results a bit patchy.

8.  ODORLESS OR LOW ODOR:  Most tanning lotions have an usual odor that can be annoying or offensive.  Choose a product that is known for it’s pleasant scent.  Here is a reasonably price, low odor sunless tanning lotion that is very effective.

Skin Cancer and Tanning Facts:

Our skin is our largest organ and I believe we really take it for granted.

Melanoma is the most aggressive of all skin cancer types and while only 5% of people diagnosed with skin cancer get Melanoma, it is responsible for nearly 100% of skin cancer deaths. (approx. 8000 per year).

Inside workers who get intermittent exposure to the sun actually have a higher incidence of skin cancer than outside workers who are exposed to sunlight regularly.  In addition, most skin cancers appear on parts of the body which get little sun exposure.  Therefore, it is difficult for researchers to determine if sun exposure is largely and directly responsible for cancer development.

For example, although it is possible for anyone to get skin cancer, people of color typically get skin lesions in the palms of their hands and the soles of their feet where their skin has the least amount of melanin. The focus, therefore, seems to be more on genetics and where your skin is the fairest.

Basal cell carcinoma is more common to Latinos and Asians, Squamous cell carcinoma is more common to Blacks and Indians and Acral Lentiginous Melanoma is more common to White/Lightest skin types.

Other risk factors are also associated with melanoma, such as a family history, skin type and having a large number of sizable moles on the body. Like nonmelanoma skin cancer, melanoma can arise on any area of the body, regardless of whether or not a sunburn occurred in that location. says that the sun exposure pattern believed to result in melanoma is that of brief, intense exposure – a blistering sunburn – rather than years of tanning.

Either way, it is important to balance your tanning regimen.  A little exposure to the sun does have it’s benefits, plus an occasional visit to the tanning salon is a good way to get started.  Then, maintain the base tan with sunless tanning lotions that you can safely use at home.  Never overdo it.  Be smart.

Check your body monthly for unusually appearing or growing moles. And,when you’re checking your body for skin cancer moles, please check your scalp, too.

Cancer Insurance

No one wants to experience a cancer diagnosis, but the fact is that the risk of getting cancer is great. In the United States, men have slightly less than a one in two lifetime risk of developing cancer; for women, the risk is a little more than one in three (Cancer Facts and Figures 2009, American Cancer Society). A cancer/specified-disease insurance policy is designed to provide you with cash benefits during covered cancer treatments.

Janet received her stage II breast cancer diagnosis on a Thursday.  She received an initial lump-sum payment from her Cancer insurance policy on Monday, before her lumpectomy.  She was out of work for a few days recovering but continued working though her chemotherapy and radiation treatments.  Her Cancer policy continued sending her checks in the mail for her chemotherapy, radiation and anti-nausea medications.  It even helped her pay for her hair prosthesis.  Overall, by the time she went into remission a few months later, she received $44,000.00 from her Cancer Insurance policy.  This really helped her family pay the medical expenses they incurred in addition to helping to pay for their monthly bills.  She was glad she purchased her cancer policy 10 years prior to her diagnosis;  she didn’t think she needed it because she was the first woman in her family to get breast cancer.

Here is a partial list of what a typcial Cancer Insurance policy covers:

  • Diagnosis
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Anti-nausea medication
  • Prosthesis
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Diagnostic exams/scans
  • Travel
  • Lodging
  • …and more.

If you already have cancer insurance, please leave your comments below.  I would like to hear what you think of it and what made you decide to get it.

Wreck It Ralph Movie Review by Alex Anderson

What I think about this movie… I think it was hilarious and it was very touching. But I don’t think it would be for children under 5 . Why? There are bugs that are robots and I think that they will scare the pants off the little ones. I give it 5 stars…it is fantastic!

. A Must See Movie

Definitely Not Paleo: Mexican Chocolate Whoopie Pies with Salted Caramel Buttercream

Whoopie Pies!! Salted Caramel Buttercream!! Sinful I say… 🙂

Allison Eats

Since nowadays my baking projects are at an all time minimum (ahh, remember when I used to bake every weekend??), I must reserve breaking Paleo for special occasions and/or irresistible flavor combos just screaming to be whipped up. So, when my company announced our annual Bake-Off / Bake-Sale was around the corner, my sugar-receptors kicked into gear and began creating a potentially winning recipe (Truth: they did not win, but they did sell out fast!).

I wanted to make whoopie pies, because first of all, they’re much easier to transport to work than cupcakes! But also, I felt they would be less expected. Little did I know, my two co-workers would also be adding their own delicious whoopies to the mix (one was gingerbread with lemon cream cheese filling and the other was vanilla with maple cream cheese filling)! Anyway, I decided to do a spin on the classic whoopie by going…

Coconut Oil for Weight Loss, Diabetes Management, Alzheimers Management, Beautiful Skin

My friends and family are all aware that with my recent pregnancy, I developed gestational diabetes and gained a whole new appreciation for diabetics. Of course, with the birth of my son, my diabetes disappeared, but I am now at a much higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes in my future. I need to watch what I eat and do what I can to prevent this from happening.

Diabetes is no fun. At all. I completely understand why it’s a disability. It’s very tiring, consuming and seriously changes your lifestyle. Managing it is tough. Now that I’ve had experience with it, I’m actively involved in helping diabetics and sharing what I know to help people along the way.

Coconut Oil is one of the best products to help people control their bloodsugar in a healthy, natural way. People actually eat it by the teaspoonful, or spread it on Wasa bread to make sure they are getting the proper amounts. Your bloodsugar levels will stabilize the same day you begin consumption. Here’s an interesting review I found that really helped me:

“After reading several of Bruce Fife’s books (and they were wonderfully easy-to-read for the non-scientific type), I decided to give coconut oil a try to help with losing weight and getting my blood sugar under control. As a non-medication taking, recently diagnosed diabetic, I want to try whatever natural remedies I can find to stay off insulin and other diabetes meds, in addition to meds for cholesterol, etc. I tried taking a teaspoon or two with meals and a teaspoon btw meals and my blood sugar numbers were noticeably lower the same day. (Fife says the suggested dose is 3-4 tbs/day). The taste of this brand is fantastic, light and creamy with a delicious coconutty taste! I love coconut so I was able to eat it right from the jar, but I also tried it spread on a Wasa Crisp bread–WOW, what an easy way to get MCFAs into your diet! I will definitely be using this instead of any oils for all my cooking needs (except a little EVOO mixed together with this for salad dressing.) Also, I’m using on my skin and it feels really soft, plus you also get the internal benefits from using it on your skin! GREAT PRODUCT!”

Not only is Coconut Oil good for controlling your bloodsugar, it’s also good for helping to manage your weight. YAY!! Why? Because of it’s effects on your metabolism. Coconut oil primarily consists of medium-chain fatty acids. These triglycerides can speed up the metabolism because they are so easily digested and converted into energy. Long-chain fatty acids, like those in polyunsaturated oils, are more difficult for the body to break down and use for energy. Instead, long-chain fatty acids are usually stored as fat in the body.Several scientific studies have exhibited these principles.

One study examined the effect of medium-chain fatty acids on metabolism. Participants’ metabolism was evaluated before and after a meal rich in these fats. On average, metabolism increased by 48 percent. That’s a great way to increase metabolism by just going about your day!  In obese individuals, the increase was as high as an astounding 65 percent. Studies have shown this thermogenic effect can last for 24 hours.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that medium-chain fatty acids were three times more effective at raising the metabolism than long-chain fatty acids. Researchers concluded that replacing long-chain fatty acids with medium-chain fatty acids was an effective method for weight loss. Another study from the same journal showed that eating medium-chain fatty acids increases metabolism and also helps burn off stored fat.

Here’s what I saw on Dr. Oz about the benefits of Coconut Oil for your weight, for your skin, alzheimers and even ulcers!  WOW!\

– Because it slows digestion, coconut oil also helps prevent blood sugar fluctuations after a meal by slowing the rate carbohydrates are broken down into blood glucose.
– The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil destroy candida, a condition of yeast overgrowth in the body which triggers symptoms of weight gain, carbohydrate cravings, fatigue and many others. Eliminating candida is an important part of achieving permanent weight loss.
– Coconut oil is excellent for detoxification. It cleanses the body of many infirmities, balances the digestive tract and nourishes all cells in the body. These benefits restore your health and pave the way for natural weight loss.

Tips for Using Coconut Oil to Increase Metabolism:
– Start small. If you’ve never taken coconut oil before, start with one teaspoon a day and slowly work up to 3-6 tablespoons per day. This will help your body adjust to the beneficial effects of coconut oil.

– The kind of coconut oil you choose is very important. Organic, unrefined extra virgin coconut oil is the best choice since it preserves all the natural goodness of the oil.

Alzheimers and Coconut Oil:

Alzheimers, or ‘diabetes of the brain’, begins 10-20 years before we see typical Alzheimer’s symptoms. The region of the brain that die off and cause Alzheimers, have been deprived of glucose for decades.  But if you eat medium chain triglyceride oil, i.e. coconut oil, it will feed your brain as well as your muscles and organs.  OLIVE OIL DOES NOT HAVE medium chain triglyceride oil and does not help you like coconut oil does.  You need 20 grams per day, about 2 tablespoons daily. The effects take a few hours to kick in, but once they do, you’ll notice right away. LOVE THIS STUFF!
